Making product photos sharp enough for a storefront

Product images fail at the zoom view, not the thumbnail. The fix starts with the largest original you have.

Steps

  1. Find the largest original
    Start from the biggest, least-compressed file available, not the one already on the storefront.
  2. Process it
    Drop it onto Pixmend, choose the photo model, and pick a scale factor that meets the required size.
  3. Check the material texture
    Look at fabric weave, grain, and stitching at full size, where over-processing shows first.
  4. Export and upload once
    Save the result and put that file on the storefront, rather than re-saving repeatedly.

Product photos rarely look wrong in the grid. They fall apart when a customer clicks to zoom — which is the exact moment they were supposed to do their job. Fixing that is mostly about where you start from.

Start from the largest original

Before any processing, find the biggest, least-compressed version of the image that exists. Not the one already on the storefront, which has usually been resized and re-compressed by the platform on upload.

Check, in order: the original camera file, the supplier's asset pack, and the photographer's delivery folder. A file that has been through a platform's pipeline twice has lost information permanently, and starting from it means repairing damage that a better source would not have.

Why zoom is where images fail

Storefront layouts show products at a few hundred pixels, and almost anything survives that. Zoom views display at 1000 pixels or more, and that is where a stretched or compressed image reveals itself: soft edges on the product outline, blocky gradients in a plain background, and mushy texture on exactly the surfaces a customer is trying to evaluate.

Texture is the thing that carries the purchase decision. Weave on a fabric, grain on leather, brushing on metal — these are what someone is looking for when they zoom, and they are also the first things lost to compression.

Processing

  1. Drop the original onto Pixmend. Nothing is uploaded, which matters if the product is unannounced.
  2. Choose the photo model.
  3. Pick the scale factor from the size you actually need. If your zoom view is 1600 pixels and the original is 800, x2 is the answer, not x4.
  4. Raise noise reduction only if the source is a compressed JPEG. On a clean camera file, leave it low — product texture is real detail, and flattening it defeats the purpose.
  5. Compare at 100% before exporting.

The input ceiling is 12.6MP, which most product photography sits comfortably under.

What to check before publishing

  • Material texture. Fabric, grain, and brushed finishes should look like themselves, not like a smooth surface.
  • Product edges against the background. Halos here are the most common sign of a setting pushed too far, and they read as "edited" to a customer.
  • Text on packaging. Labels and small print are unforgiving; if they are not legible after processing, the source was too small.
  • Colour. Processing should not shift it. If the colour moved, something in the export path is wrong — and colour accuracy drives returns more than sharpness does.

Where this does not help

Colour accuracy. If the product photographed the wrong colour, that is a white-balance and lighting problem, and no amount of upscaling addresses it.

Bad lighting. Blown highlights have no detail left in them, and blocked-up shadows have none either. Both need reshooting.

Focus errors. If the front of the product is sharp and the label is not, the label detail was never recorded.

For a catalogue that keeps hitting these, the cheaper fix upstream is a shooting standard: one camera setting, one lighting setup, and archived originals at full resolution. Processing is a repair for images you already have, not a substitute for capturing them properly.

Keep the master

Store the processed export separately from the original, and keep both. When the storefront theme changes and the zoom view moves to a larger size, you will want to re-run from the original rather than enlarging an already-enlarged file — each round of processing compounds whatever the previous one got wrong.
