Plain answers

Where do my images go?
Nowhere. They're opened and processed in your browser's memory and saved back to your disk. There is no upload step to skip. None exists.
Do I need to be online?
To load the page, yes, and your first run fetches the models (about 12 MB, cached on this device afterwards). Your images never travel, online or not.
Why will it not run in my browser?
Pixmend needs WebGPU to reach your GPU. x2 is no lighter: it runs the same x4 model and resamples the result, so there is no slower path to fall back to. Chrome or Edge will run it. That is a spec limit, not an error.
Why does my computer slow down while it runs?
Because your computer is the one doing the work. There is no server to hand it to, so the model runs on your own GPU and the tab holds a large image in memory the whole time. Faster hardware finishes sooner. Nothing is broken.
How is this different from generative upscalers?
Generative tools synthesize plausible detail, and can change a face or a texture. Pixmend only reconstructs from what's in your image. It's repair, not reinterpretation.
What files can I feed it?
PNG, JPEG, WebP and AVIF, up to about 12 megapixels (roughly 3500 × 3500). Machines with less memory get a lower ceiling, and Pixmend says so before it starts, not after. Output is PNG.
